PLAY!
Contributor: Guillaume Vieira, Sérgio Bilou Carronha
Play is the enjoyment during an physical activity, as well as a description for the activation of any audio visual device. Before this ambiguity, the exhibition presents a distance between the role of the body in action and the common use of the word. It is left open to the spectator the possibility of using the body as an object to action or to look on others action. PLAY! is an exhibition based on two different work groups, where each author deals with different assumptions and expectations about the action. Sérgio Bilou Carronha sculptures have a clear conscience on their aestethic role while leaving it open to acquire a musical significance as an instrument, as Guillaume Vieira photographs describe physical activities in suspension, subtracting their perception in a specific role transforming this agents on passive figures, isolating them from their own action.

BIZARRE in Cologne

During the Cologne’s Design Week, the Sisley store in Ehrenstrasse will feature Bizarre, a collection of ceramics, especially created by Sam Baron for Sisley, re-inventing one of the best Portuguese traditions through a contemporary vision of the old “savoir-faire”. The collection assembles a futuristic approach of souvenirs inherited from the past, merging details of a long tradition of nature-inspired shapes with classic vases and tableware pieces.
Consisting of five limited-production objects, which will be sold in the Sisley store during the Design Week, the Bizarre collection is a range of vases and tableware in classic shapes with industrial-production ceramic figurines used as three-dimensional decorative details. A way of “populating” our home with strange, hybrid creatures: from a vase which hosts a family of swans or with indiscreet rabbit ears that create floral motifs, to the plate that seems to have a fish swimming in it, or the salt and pepper set where a bee has settled gently. The ceramics are made by hand and produced by Olfaire, in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.

VIAGRA, CIALIS, ROLEX WATCH

Contributor: Luis Urculo
“Viagra, Cialis, Rolex Watch is a portrait/interpretation/walk through the spam that the artist Luis Urculo receives on his studio everyday. The work is based on mails, images, databases and concepts as contemporary landscapes to create to create pieces in wool, paper, glass and wood. Unperfect drawings for an unperfect life.” (L.U.)

LADYKILLERS
Contributors: TOSCA.lab
Created in 2006 by the designers Ricardo Milne and Catarina Nunes, the TOSCA.Lab project is a studio/workshop that fuses the fields of ceramics, design and illustration in order to create its own language inserted in the new trends of urban Art.
The new illustrations and “CeramicToys” presented in this exhibition focus on visual contrasts that give them originality and still point into new directions in the constant research of TOSCA.lab. On one hand we have the irreverence and asymmetry of Urban Art and Graffiti, on the other the harmony and order of the “Vector Art”, both visions lead to illustrations loaded with irony and dark humour.

TRADITIONAL TUNISIAN TAPESTRIES WORKSHOP
Contributors: Sam Baron, Elliott Burford
Under the new direction of the French Institute of Cooperation of Tunis to the applied arts, Tunisian and European designers are invited to explore the traditional skills of Tunisia to create new works. Each designer is associated with an artisan in an outdated or declining sector, with a view to creating unique pieces and renew interest in those industries. During the workshops, craftsmen and designers collaborate and combine their skills to conceive innovative new forms, from sketches to prototype. The output of these workshops will culminate in a 2010 exhibition, ‘The Collection’.
Sam Baron and Elliott Burford, designers from FABRICA, are invited to work in the field of plant fibers, with a focus on woven reeds. The rod is used for woven floor mats. Making objects with braided fiber plant stem is a Tunisian tradition, performed primarily by men, as working conditions are generally difficult in overheated workshops. They have chosen to work the ground, on the border between the West and the East…

TRANS-FORMA IN ATHENS
Contributor: Fabrica Design Department
After the Milan Furniture Fair (April 2009) and the Venice Art Biennial (June 2009), Trans-Forma, an exhibition of classic Zanotta designs which Fabrica’s young designers have reinterpreted with a modern twist, will be presented from the 11th to the 28th of November at the Zanotta Shop in Athens, Greece.
The exhibition envisages 17 icon items from Zanotta’s collection, which under the guidance of Sam Baron, designer and responsible of Fabrica’s design projects, have been reinterpreted in a metaphorical key by the team’s young creatives. From the clothes stand Shanghai to the seat Sella, the inflatable armchair Blow, the mirror Milo, the table Bieder, every item gradually takes on unforeseen forms and functions among the catalogue’s evergreens.
