TRADITIONAL TUNISIAN TAPESTRIES WORKSHOP

Under the new direction of the French Institute of Cooperation of Tunis to the applied arts, Tunisian and European designers are invited to explore the traditional skills of Tunisia to create new works. Each designer is associated with an artisan in an outdated or declining sector, with a view to creating unique pieces and renew interest in those industries. During the workshops, craftsmen and designers collaborate and combine their skills to conceive innovative new forms, from sketches to prototype. The output of these workshops will culminate in a 2010 exhibition, ‘The Collection’.
Sam Baron and Elliott Burford, designers from FABRICA, are invited to work in the field of plant fibers, with a focus on woven reeds. The rod is used for woven floor mats. Making objects with braided fiber plant stem is a Tunisian tradition, performed primarily by men, as working conditions are generally difficult in overheated workshops.
