The MOBILE MUSEUM is a travelling museum, with contents contributed by people from all over the world (thats you). We welcome contributions from different backgrounds. Whether you are an artist, designer, illustrator, photographer or other practitioner, we want to hear from you.
Unlike a conventional Museum the collection is always changing, evolving depending on its location, with the location itself dictating the theme.
The first Mobile Museum exhibition took place during the Milan Furniture Fair 2011, under the curratorial Theme of “Family”. The second MM exhibition was staged at the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the Friday Late Summer Camp programme. Most recently it was hosted in Brussels as part of Design September 2011.

Created and curated by: Dean Brown & Philip Bone

Home Entertainment is an installation proposed by Fabrica, constructed out of industrial storage shelving and stacks of obsolete technologies from the 1980s – dial telephones, VHS tapes and old school ghetto blasters, recreated in perfect detail in flawless white ceramic. The effect is that of a mausoleum of defunct consumer electronics from the recent past, the place where old technologies go to die.
Home Entertainment is both a work of interactive art and a design piece. It raises questions about the relationships between technology, innovation, nostalgia and the uncanny. At the same time it articulates an approach to interactive art, which stresses a transactional or relational form of audience engagement whereby passers by in the street are invited to take an active part in the ongoing construction of the show. This approach derives equally from video game culture and the critical art theory of relational aesthetics.

Created by Fabrica for Plusdesign, this exhibition is an assemblage of Fabrica selected works that are re-interpreted in a new and unexpected way. Starting from an existing library of shapes, “Assemblage” is a visual journey through a landscape of compositions, stories and crafts where wood meets glass, metal and paper. Fabrica presents a limited edition collection of pieces of furniture that unfold into structural vases, picture frames, wall graphics and exquisite lamps. An inventive work of balance and an ongoing dialogue between different textures, materials and modules that create a unique visual collage.

One of Experimenta Design Biennale’s “Tangenciais” projects is the exhibition by Mariana Fernandes “Lisboa, The Useful Guide of Useless Places”, showcased in the Fabrica Features Lisbon gallery. The city of Lisbon is gracefully deconstructed—all the museums, monuments, buildings and tours of obvious interest are removed—in a way to be reorganized through some delightful useless details. Details that somehow are maps made by those who live daily in the city and love it. It outlines an alternative route in the form of postcards, where some peculiarities might be discovered.

A knife, train journeys, a jewel, a beer glass and books are just some of the revealing objects that have inspired Objet Préféré, a unique collection of 15 pieces of furniture created following a workshop between young Fabrica designers and personnel – craftsmen, technicians, office staff – of the Grand-Hornu Images cultural centre in Belgium. An intense and rewarding week of exchanges, brainstorming, interviews and photographic sessions on the theme “Favourite Object”, which led to the creation of 15 pieces of furniture that represent a perfect fusion between the creative and design talent of young artist-researchers from the Benetton Group’s communication research centre, and the expert skills of Grand-Hornu technicians.

Personal, intimate havens in harmony with their surroundings; they reflect on subjects like work, pop-up culture, loneliness, games. Alternative settings were one can live in a better way with more awareness, where design is at the service of research into materials, forms and structures.

Elliott Burford is a graphic designer and art director who also works in visual art. The way Elliott Burford looks around him is special. Details permit, little by little, the construction of his particular attitude and regard, nourishing his way of understanding and dealing with the world, in order to re-write “The Story”. In this exhibition, you will find unique simple stories, initiated with the absurd words taken from the spam object sentences, juxtaposed and augmented with his drawings, creating a narrative dialogue and reflecting Elliott Burford’s recipes for observing and foreseeing the everyday world.

Down Side Up, a change-inspired collection of wood furniture. Down Side Up is an encounter between experimentation and functionality, where carefully dimensioned volumes of wood can have many uses, a consequence of their direction and interpretation. By adding a few essential elements such as legs, handles, or hooks, and by choosing a particular orientation, a basic unit is transformed into something new and personal.

Fabrica has been invited by the Parisian department store Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche to inaugurate La Maison d’Édition (The Publishing House). Meant as a dialogue between different realms and a celebration of multicultural creation, this unique journey designed by Sam Baron and the young Fabrica’s designers follows the principles of a treasure hunt.
Sheltered below 7 renovated glass canopies and nestled within 7 distinctive universes, the 7 products, designed exclusively for the show, thread a graphic and poetic path of identities at the heart of the Maison d’Édition.
